Opera Open 2021
The creative memory as a HERITAGE in the cultural life of the city inspired Plovdiv Opera to open OPERA OPEN with an impressive performance featuring over 150 artists, once again bringing music to the summit of Bunardzhika Hill. This historic location hosted Plovdiv's first open-air opera performance on June 5, 1965. The remaining performances and concerts will traditionally take place on the stage of the Ancient Theatre, whose artistic function dates back to antiquity.
The fond memories and partnerships formed with artists from the world’s leading opera stages—HERITAGE of the memorable 2019 festival—enable the audience to once again experience the remarkable talent of names like José Cura and Carlos Almaguer. Returning to OPERA OPEN are conductors Jacopo Sipari di Pescasseroli and Pavel Balev, principal dancers Marta Petkova and Nikola Hadjitanev, director Ursula Horner, and internationally acclaimed Bulgarian soloists such as Kiril Manolov, Mariana Pencheva, Marcin Bronikowski, Ivan Momirov, and others.
The challenges faced by the arts in 2020—a year when time seemed to stand still—also left a positive HERITAGE. Four prepared projects will premiere for the audience of OPERA OPEN this year: Carmina Burana by Orff, The Barber of Seville by Rossini, Tosca by Puccini, and Don Giovanni by Mozart!
