OPERA OPEN 2022 – A DIFFERENT WORLD

The OPERA OPEN 2022 festival at the Ancient Theatre in Plovdiv continues its tradition of presenting a multi-genre program featuring world-class guest artists.

Highlights of the 2022 program include the premieres of the ballet Anna Karenina and the opera Nabucco, as well as the return of the acclaimed production Orpheus and Eurydice, which captivated over 7,000 viewers in 2019 and solidified Plovdiv's reputation as a European Capital of Culture. Once again, the Ancient Theatre will host renowned international talents such as Stefano Poda, Leo Mujić, José Cura, Carlos Almaguer, Michał Znaniecki, Ursula Horner, Krassimira Stoyanova, Marta Petkova, Kiril Manolov, Martin Tsonev, Maria Radoeva, and others.

The 2022 selection, themed "A Different World," features productions that inspire faith through the transformative power of art. These include the triumph of light in Orpheus and Eurydice directed by Stefano Poda, the iconic hymn to freedom in the Jewish chorus of Nabucco, the reckoning of vice in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, and the strength of sacrifice for humanity in Jesus Christ Superstar and Maria de Buenos Aires directed by Veselka Kuncheva.

A symbolic "gateway" to this different world envisioned by artists will be the opening Concert for Peace on June 19, featuring the Children’s Choir of Bulgaria. More than 400 children from across the country will deliver their messages of hope and unity through song.
