Two Top Conductors At The Ancient Theatre
Derek Gleeson, the music director and conductor of the Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra will present a multimedia performance "The Soundtrack of Hollywood" on 30 June and on July 2 one of the most emblematic names among the world conductors - Niksa Baresa (Croatia), will conduct the international production "Carmen ".
Derek Gleeson is an Irish/American musician. He was born in Dublin, on 28 February 1964. He is currently the music director and conductor of the Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra[1] since 1997 and is also the conductor at the Anna Livia Dublin International Opera Festival. Since 2012 Gleeson is also music director & conductor of the Rachmaninov Festival Orchestra. Since January 2016 Gleeson is Principal Guest Conductor or The Harbin Symphony Orchestra, Harbin, China.
Gleeson composed Film Scores for the feature films The White Pony[16] (Director Brian Kelly); Irish Whiskey[17] (Director Jon Stevens); Moving Target[18] (Director Paul Ziller); The Doorway[19] (Director Michael Druxman); Kitchen[20] (Director Kieron J Walsh) and additional music on The Suicide Club[21] (Director Rachel Samuels).
In addition to composing music for film, Gleeson is Director of Ceoil Productions Ireland/Screen Training Ireland's Film Scoring Program. He served as composer advisor to Moonstone International and as Music Jury chairman and Composer of the Irish Film & Television Awards (IFTAs). Gleeson is Director of Ireland's "MA in Scoring for Film & Visual Media", a Pulse College/Windmill Lane Studio.
NIKSA BAREZA, conductor
In December 2010 the conductor celebrated a raving success with Beethoven’s Fidelio in Mexico City on the occasion of Palacio de Bellas Artes’ re-opening. Right away after the premiere he was appointed principal guest conductor and now returns regularly to the Mexican opera house and since then has conducted new productions of Tosca,Cavalleria rusticana, Nabucco, Haensel und Gretel and concerts. In the 2013/14 season he conducted the Flying Dutchmen at Festival Guanajuato and the Magic Flute, furthermore a Verdi gala concert at Teatro Juarez.
Highlights of the last seasons include his conducting at the Grand Théâtre de Genève with Der Rosenkavalier by Strauss, and a memorable new production of Aida at the Taipei Arena with the Taipei Symphony Orchestra.
In autumn of 2010 Niksa Bareza conducted a new production of Puccini’sBohème at the Théâtre du Capitole Toulouse in France. In the previous seasons he led numerous Puccini operas, Madama Butterfly at the Milan Scala, where he recently directed productions of Tosca and La Bohéme, too; aTrittico revival at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Tosca at the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich.
Besides the highly acclaimed performances of Richard Wagner’s and Richard Strauss’ works in Chemnitz, a sensational Salome-series with Inga Nielsen and Anja Silja and a celebrated performance series of Verdi’s Ballo in Maschera with Michele Crider, both at the Staatsoper Hamburg rank among to the outstanding successes of the previous seasons. Niksa Bareza was guest at many important opera houses such as the Norske Opera Oslo, the Teatro Comunale Firenze, the Teatro Regio Parma, the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin and the Teatro alla Scala Milano, where he conducted Götterdämmerung, Walküre, Siegfried, Fidelio, Tosca, Manon Lescaut, La Bohème, Trovatore and a new production of Andrea Chenier.
In further concert-engagements Niksa Bareza worked at the conductor’s desks of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, of Mozarteum Orchester Salzburg, Orchestra Sinfonica Arturo Toscanini and Croatian Radio Symphony Orchestra Zagreb, where he has been chief conductor.
From 2001 until 2007 Niksa Bareza was music director of the Robert-Schumann-Philharmonie-Chemnitz and the Oper Chemnitz. Over his long career as music director in Zagreb, he conducted numerous concerts with theZagreb philharmonic orchestra. He also led a variety of opera performances at the famous St. Petersburg Kirov Theatre, the Opera House Zurich and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Graz.
