Details
The musical is based on George Bernard Shaw's play "Pygmalion" (1912). It was transformed into a Broadway musical titled "My Fair Lady" by book writer Alan Jay Lerner and composer Frederick Loewe. The musical was also adapted into a film starring Audrey Hepburn in 1964, winning eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Bernard Shaw himself was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1925.
In his play, Shaw draws on the ancient Greek myth of the sculptor Pygmalion, who falls in love with a female statue he carved from ivory. The plot centers around Professor Higgins, who spends six months teaching the poor flower girl Eliza Doolittle to prove that with education, even the most unrefined girl can acquire the manners of a duchess. This leads to a domino effect of comedic adventures as Eliza simultaneously infuriates and charms her companions while navigating the role that Professor Higgins has imposed on her.
