The choir of Opera Plovdiv is an integral part of the city’s musical theatre. Founded in 1953, the ensemble is regularly featured both on the theatrical and concert stages. Among its conductors, we must express gratitude and respect for the founder and long-time leader Angel Hristov, Atanas Dimitrov, Prof. Miroslav Popsavov, the younger generation - Krastin Nastev, Zdravko Lazarov, Prof. Vesela Geleva, Radostina Borisova and Konstantin Dobroykov.
Composed of highly qualified artists, the choir is capable of performing a wide range of tasks – from operatic and oratorio works to both classical and contemporary compositions, large a cappella pieces or intricate miniatures by composers such as Monteverdi, Gluck, Rodion Shchedrin and Lazar Nikolov.
The choir is a sought-after partner of European institutions and stages, where it has proudly represented the Bulgarian choral tradition. Notable performances include tours in European and non-European theatres, open-air stages, and festivals in Germany, Austria, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, the UK and South Korea along with excellent collaborations with Mediterranean and Balkan countries.
The choir has participated in major stage projects in collaboration with other theatrical ensembles, which has become an established and promising practice. A significant example is the collaboration with the Munich Philharmonic Choir and the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Valery Gergiev.
