Premiere of "La Clemenza di Tito" at the Ancient Theater.
OPERA OPEN presents the premiere of Mozart's "La Clemenza di Tito" at the Ancient Theater on July 15th. Mozart's final opera is a rarely performed work due to its unusual plot and musical challenges for the performers. In Bulgaria, the opera has been staged only once. Tackling this difficult task are conductor Dian Chobanov, director Vera Nemirova, artist Julian Tabakov, and Dragomir Yosifov, the choir conductor and accompanist for the recitatives.
The theme of the production revolves around power and solitude. At the center of "La Clemenza di Tito" is a ruler who struggles to define himself, torn between duty and love. "Titus is one of the greatest warmongers in history, the Roman ruler who destroyed Jerusalem to the extent that only the Western Wall remains. When he returns to Rome after this brutal war, he decides to change and be virtuous and merciful, but it doesn't happen magically and instead turns into a dictatorship of goodness. He feels comfortable, but fails to notice that he is plunging everyone else into catastrophe. All the characters are interconnected by fate, and it is very difficult for anyone to break free from this dependency," shares Vera Nemirova, who previously staged the opera in Lucerne 10 years ago.
The musical rendition of "The Mercy of Titus" is shaped by the Viennese-trained maestro Dian Chobanov and choir conductor Dragomir Yosifov.
The limited recitatives, enchanting music with remarkable humanistic arias, and deeply moving ensembles turn the work into yet another masterpiece by Mozart. The role of Titus is performed by tenor Georgi Sultanov, while the role of Sesto is portrayed by American countertenor with a rapidly rising career, Ray Chenez, who creates an authentic character with exceptional musicality and professionalism.
The remaining roles are executed by Vera Girginova, Evgenia Ralcheva, Veronika Jensen, and Victor Krastanov.
Tickets for ""La Clemenza di Tito" can be purchased at the Opera box office, through the Eventim network, and online at eventim.bg and grabo.bg.
