Bulgarian Premiere! The surreal opera by Astor Piazzolla—a fusion of tango, poetry, and classical music—tells the story of Maria, who, seduced by tango music, descends into the underworld of Buenos Aires. This passionate tale with biblical symbolism, where the sacred and profane intertwine, is brought to life by the imagination of director Veselka Kuncheva ("The Queen of Spades," "I, Sisyphus," "The Embedding," and more) in a highly visual dream-like spectacle featuring the special participation of Lucy Diakovska. The impressive stage design and fiery choreography are unified by the Latin American instrument, the bandoneon, which transforms from a seductive "voice" in the orchestra to a destructive weapon on stage.
Veselka Kuncheva, director: "I admit that the first time I encountered the work of Ferrer and Piazzolla, I fell into complete despair. So much sorrow, so much love, so much tenderness, passion, anger, and faith in life—it's impossible to take it all in at once without exploding, without turning yourself completely inside out, with the soul outward and the flesh inward."
