"The Sleeping Beauty" is considered one of the most beautiful ballet scores ever written by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and has become one of the most famous ballets in the world classical repertoire. Alongside the ballet masterpieces of the great composer such as "Swan Lake" and "The Nutcracker," "The Sleeping Beauty" is a staple in the repertoire of any reputable world theater. First staged in 1890 at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg, this title remains one of the most beloved ballets for audiences of all ages. Charles Perrault's fairy tale, presented through the language of dance, captivates with its magnificent music, virtuosity of dance, and a variety of fairy-tale characters, offering not only a dance challenge but also vibrant acting performances.
The ballet "The Sleeping Beauty" at the Stara Zagora Opera is presented in a classical style, with choreography based on the brilliant interpretation by Marius Petipa. The staging and direction are by the great Russian dancer, choreographer, film actor, and established ballet entrepreneur and teacher Andrey Bosov, who came to Stara Zagora at the invitation of prima ballerina Sylvia Tomova, the artistic director of the Stara Zagora Opera Ballet. The sets for "The Sleeping Beauty" are the work of the renowned Bulgarian artist and set designer Ivan Tokadzhiev, while the fairy-tale costumes are designed by Maria Blazheva, who created the costumes for the National Ballet Sofia's production in 2004.
In the performance of "The Sleeping Beauty" ballet, the entire multinational ballet troupe of the State Opera Stara Zagora participates. In recent creative seasons, this young troupe, under the guidance of prima ballerina and teacher Sylvia Tomova, has made remarkable strides in its professional growth, achievements highly praised by professional critics, connoisseurs, and audiences across Bulgaria and Europe.
On May 28, 2024, the roles of Aurora and Prince Desire will be danced by the prima ballerina of the State Opera Stara Zagora, Aneliya Dimitrova, and Fiordi Loha, while the young star Alesia Bakin will portray the Lilac Fairy.
The action transports the viewer back to the 17th century, during the time of Louis XIV, one of the founders of the ballet art. It was a time marked by fairy-tale splendor, filled with arts, music, literature, dance, fashion, and leisure for pleasure. In the production, characters from Charles Perrault's fairy tales appear during the court ball scenes, including the Bluebird, Puss in Boots, and Little Red Riding Hood. The action takes place in the castle of Usse, the Loire Valley, and the Enchanted Forest with Princess Aurora (Dawn) and Prince Desire (Desire). The viewer encounters the conflicting elements in the world - the bearers of good - the Lilac Fairy (violet flame) and the fairy of evil (Carabosse).
"The Sleeping Beauty" is the fourth major classical ballet title to enter the repertoire of the talented ballet troupe of the Stara Zagora Opera in 2021. On May 31, 2022, with great success, "The Sleeping Beauty" was presented on the stage of Hall 1 at the National Palace of Culture.
