The Opera "The Pearl Fishers" – A Beautiful Tale of Love, Friendship, and Sacrifice
Director Slavcho Nikolov describes his latest production of this thrilling title from the treasury of French classics as a beautiful Eastern fairy tale. In tandem with designer Gendoni, the director relies on a magical vision and a dramatic narrative filled with complex human relationships, stirring and evoking a storm of emotions with the melodic and touching music of the young Bizet—music that captivates and moves.
The composer wrote his opera Les Pêcheurs de Perles (The Pearl Fishers) at the age of 24, and even before turning 25, its premiere took place in 1863 at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris. Specialists consider The Pearl Fishers to be, to some extent, a stepping stone toward his brilliant Carmen. The plot revolves around the rivalry between two pearl fishermen, Zurga and Nadir, who are both in love with the beautiful Leïla. The story unfolds against the backdrop of the exotic landscapes of the island of Ceylon (Sri Lanka). Leïla, however, faces an even more difficult choice: between duty and love.
As in most romantic tales, love triumphs. The priestess of Brahma, Leïla, cannot remain indifferent to Nadir's passionate declarations and breaks her vow of purity and celibacy. The lovers face execution but manage to escape unexpectedly when Zurga sets a fire that allows them to flee from captivity. The intensity of emotions defines the lyrical tone that predominates in the music. It is no coincidence that the most recognizable moments in The Pearl Fishers include Nadir’s melancholically beautiful romance and the duet between Nadir and Zurga in the first act, filled with memories and oaths of eternal friendship.
On April 24, audiences will see Emilia Terzieva in the role of Leïla, a soloist of the Stara Zagora State Opera with an international career. The young tenor Stoyan Buyukliev, laureate of several national opera competitions, will embody the role of Nadir. The talented young Bulgarian baritone, Yosif Slavov—who reached the finals of the Operalia International Opera Competition in 2023 and is currently part of the Young Artists Program at the Bayerische Staatsoper—will also perform as Nadir. Yosif Slavov is widely regarded as a rising star of the Great Bulgarian Opera School. The role of Nourabad will be performed by Evgeni Arabadzhiev, known for his powerful performances on the stages of the Stara Zagora and Plovdiv operas.
The performance will be conducted by maestro Vladimir Boshnakov, with choirmasters Mladen Stanev and Stefania Ruseva, and choreography by Romina Slavova. The orchestra and choir of the Stara Zagora State Opera will participate, with linguistic preparation for the singers and subtitle translation by Snejina Zdravkova.
