The musical "Evita" has been performed for over 40 years in London’s West End and on Broadway in the USA, and it has been translated into over 14 languages. This makes it one of the most famous musicals by Andrew Lloyd Webber worldwide, alongside "Jesus Christ Superstar," "The Phantom of the Opera," and "Cats." It has received three Tony Awards, the most prestigious honor for musicals in the USA.
The plot is perhaps the most successful portrayal of the life of María Eva Duarte de Perón, the second wife of Argentine President Juan Perón, and the First Lady of the South American republic for six years until her early death at the age of just 33 in 1952. Her controversial story is brought to life on the stage of Opera Plovdiv by director Nina Naydenova, choreographer Boriana Sechanova, set designer Elitsa Georgieva, and costume designer Nikolina Kostova-Bogdanova.
Director Nina Naydenova has extensively studied the historical facts about Eva Perón, who became a myth in Argentina, equally loved and hated. Her approach explores "Fame" as ambition, mission, weapon, protest, and fanaticism. For the production at Opera Plovdiv, the Argentine government has assisted in providing authentic photos and footage of Eva Perón’s life—her meetings with workers, her fiery speeches from the terrace of the Presidency (or the Pink House), the extravagant spending, trips to Europe, the funeral processions, and more. These documentary materials are skillfully woven into the set design through the multimedia work of visual artist Nikola Nalbantov.
