At the age of 78, 16 years after Aida and 5 years after Otello, Giuseppe Verdi created his last opera, the 26th in his repertoire and the third musical-theatrical work based on a Shakespearean plot, following Macbeth and Otello. In it, Sir John Falstaff is a rogue—corpulent, monstrous, greedy, and gluttonous. Like most comedic characters of that time, he is a coward for whom women are “daily bread.” At the same time, Falstaff is also an allegorical figure of old age, characterized by its inherent and desperate insatiability.

Instead of being set in the Middle Ages, the premiere production “immerses” the gluttonous and cuckolded Sir John Falstaff in the colorful atmosphere of La Dolce Vita—the era of “sweet life” in Italy during the 1960s.
