The plot unfolds in 15th-century Spain and tells the story of the love triangle between Count di Luna, the gypsy Azucena, and the troubadour Manrico. Azucena, haunted by her family's tragic history, seeks revenge for her mother's death, while Manrico, who is in love with Leonora, is the main adversary of the Count. The personal dramas of the characters take place against the backdrop of the political intrigues and social conflicts of the time, adding extra depth to the story.
