Opera Open 2020

The 2020 edition of OPERA OPEN focuses on the great Bulgarian names in opera, with a total of 12 events taking place between July and September. Among the highlights is the highly anticipated star gala of Sonya Yoncheva, who has captivated audiences at the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, La Scala, Bavarian State Opera, Berlin State Opera, Vienna State Opera, and Paris Opera.

The festival will host four generations of performers who have brought international acclaim to Bulgaria on the world’s major opera stages. Opera diva Raina Kabaivanska will attend in person to celebrate the 20th anniversary of her international masterclass at NBU and to present Italian star Vittoria Yeo. Another native of Plovdiv, mezzo-soprano Mariana Pencheva, with a long-standing career in Europe’s top opera houses, will join forces with the world-renowned Kiril Manolov, named "Musician of the Year 2019." One of the most prominent Bulgarian tenors, Kamen Chanev, with performances across Europe, North America, and Asia, will star in the opening gala The Gates of Dreams.

The program also features esteemed Bulgarian musicians who need no introduction: Vesko Eschkenazy, concertmaster of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam; maestro Pavel Balev, conductor of the Baden-Baden Philharmonic; and Zornitsa Ilarionova, winner of the Grand Prize of the competition and the special award of French National Radio.
